My cat arches her back and tail goes fat.?

When I wake up and come out of my bedroom. My cat runs from where ever she is and arches her back and her tail goes fat. She doesn't hiss at me. I know I'm pretty scary looking when I wake up. But I didn't think I was that bad. Is she trying to tell me she wants me to play with her?

She is scared or startled and going into a defensive mode. By arching her back and fluffing her tail, it gives the impression she is larger than she really is and ready to fight. If she lays her ears down on her head, watch out!

If she doesn't hiss, she realizes it is you and all is well. And she figures since you are up, you can feed her!
