A Look at Causes of Feline Hair Loss

Cats constantly shed fur, something you'll know if you've ever owned one. However, health issues can sometimes lead to abnormal amounts of hair loss. Serious underlying conditions can cause this hair loss which is known as alopecia. Whether he's balding in spots or all over his body, there is cause for concern. Pruritic and non-pruritic are the two main categories of feline hair loss. Cats with pruritic hair loss bite, lick, and scratch more than usual because of their itchy skin. Non-pruritic hair loss can be painful. However, cats can often lick the area.

Pruritic hair loss is usually caused by allergic reactions. Felines have them in much the same way people do. Reactions to flea or insect bites . See your vet if this occurs, because he may want you to give your cat medication on a systematic basis that will keep fleas and bugs from biting him and starting colonies in his fur. Switching brands of food may cause an allergic reaction. Your cat may also have one because of pollen, dust, or other irritants.

Felines can also develop ringworm which is caused by a fungus. It's very contagious, and once it gets started under your cat's fur, you may not even know it's there until his fur begins to fall out. If your pet does indeed have ringworm, you'll be able to see circular lesions in the areas where the hair falls out. Your vet will need to give your cat anti-fungal cream to help get rid of ringworm. If you don't treat it at all, it will take about 3 months to heal and then another 3 months for the hair to grow back.

Other causes for feline hair loss include stress, dry skin, an abscess, a traumatic surgery or injury, Cushing's disease, and hyperthyroidism. Some cats are prone to feline symmetrical alopecia because of their hormones. This may become a problem after neutering or spaying. It usually can be treated with hormone injections. It's important not to try to treat the condition on your own if you don't truly know what's causing the hair loss.
