Egg Pet Plant
Your Trash is Earth's Treasure by Curt Gutierrez
Your trash is the earth's treasure. You may find it hard to believe but that moldy bread and egg shells lying in your trash can be a great nutritious supplement for your garden or lawn. And even if you don't have a yard or a garden there are plenty of people in your area who can use something out of your trash to enrich their soil. What am I talking about? Composting, the natural biodegrading of food waste into fertilizer. This process naturally takes place as organic matter decomposes into a soil like material. Earthworms, insects, bacteria, and fungi help in the process of making it into quality soil.
Making compost is easy! Here are some ways you can compost at home:
Construct a bin to compost into. A container for compost will make the process neat as well as eliminate the potential for pets to eat food scraps all the while regulating the temperature and moisture content. Mix regularly! Asdifferent components in your compost bin come in contact with each other be sure to mix well to avoid clumping so that in the end you get the rich soil mixture you are looking for. Turn your pile weekly. This prevents the mixture from clumping. Simply flip the mixture in the bin. Harvest with your compost. Over time you will find your compost is at the consistency you want and it's time to spread some of it over your garden.
There are also various styles of composting kits which you can make or buy for your home.
The one bin system is where you construct a bin and create a pile over time allowing the compost to form in layers. You can take out the finished compost layers as you need them and throwing the unfinished compost on top. The two or three bin system allows you to make large quantities of compost, having one or two piles decomposing while your begin another. I like the rotating bin system. This process is a little more efficient however it doesn't produce the most compost. Using a rotating drum composter, lightly pack with organic matter, and simply turn daily to aerate. Or you can try sheet or trench composting. This is an easy as well as more eco friendly method. Instead of collecting organic matter in a bin, bury it in a trench in the ground and plant over it. This allows the nutrients from the decomposing matter to enter your plants root system immediately, giving it a rich and healthy start in life.
Here are a list of items that are good for composting: Raw Vegetable scraps Raw Fruit Scraps Egg Shells Recycled Egg crates Paper Towels Coffee grounds Old spices Burlap coffee sacks Stale bread Wood ashes ( As long as the wood was untreated) Hair Old wine Pencil shavings Animal bones Paper envelopes' Raw meat scraps Corn based plastics
Things NOT to compost: Chemically treated wood products Human or pet wastes Non- organic plastics Plastic wrap Tin foil Disposable razors Diseased plants Paper that is heavily coated Dairy products Feminine Hygene Products Diapers Weeds Cooked rice Most cooked items Aerosol Cans Ceramics and Pottery Glass Coated Cardboard containers (cereal, juice box) Styrofoam Plastic Screw Tops Plastic coated cardboard Tires Envelopes for shipping
