Dog Door - Know Your Pet's Shoulder Width, Height, and Weight
If you're installing a dog door in your house, be sure to pick the right size, material, locking settings, and color for your home.
Size cut is important - you want your dog to be comfortable when passing through the dog door
Dog doors come in many sizes, some can be enough to fit a range of dog heights and shoulder widths. But if you dog is a large as pony, you should get the extra large doors. You may want to think about a custom-order dog, especially if yours is really a big dog, with a capital B. Large and very large dog doors often come in a size of their own, so there's often no problem with shoulder width right there.
But if you got the most common one-size-range-fits-most dog door, you need to choose the size cut precisely. This means you need to measure your dog's height (from foot to head while it's standing on all fours) and the width of its shoulders. A majority of dog doors are sold with or comes with size cut guides that list weight range, height, and shoulder width. So then you only need to follow the rest of the instructions in installing the dog door.
No one questions that nobody else knows your pet like you do, but when you make a mistake and get a the small size for your bulky small dog, you could end up inconveniencing your pet. When your dog kneels and crawls just so it would fit through the dog door, that's sign something went wrong with the installation.
Some pets are known to muscle their way when they see a way in or out, one in which they think they can fit through. This happens often especially when at play. With an ill-sized dog door, your pet might get injured or hurt needlessly. If it's running away from an intruder or another dog, that ill-sized dog door can be a hassle.
Choose from hard or soft flaps
When you own a multitude of dogs and have a fenced backyard or garden, then your pets may have a play-run route around and even through your home. Use a soft flap if you have small dogs that look delicate or are old or recovering from injuries. For small home with over-energetic dogs that may abuse a soft flap, it's recommended you use a hard flap.
Security concerns - why lock settings are vital for dog doors
Dog flaps usually open both ways - inwards and outwards - but when a lock setting is available, it's a good security measure. You could, for instance, set up the lock so that when your dog returns at night your pet will be locked inside the house. If you want to vacuum the house, for example, you can do the reverse - so your dog will be locked out when it leaves through dog door. If you worry other animals may use the dog door to gain entry to your home, by all means think about getting an automatic dog door. Your pet will be allowed to pass through the door since it unlocks in response only to your pet.
