When using a telephoto lens it is possible to stand at a distance far away that the pet does not scare off. If the pet stays unaware of the photography happening around him, he will stay natural. To capture your pet on film, you should be ready and quick. The pet must be pre focused and the exposure pre-set to be ready for the shot. Refocusing or resetting the metering shouldn't be done.

It is not difficult to get the right exposure when one shoots pets. Simply use the camera on automatic or set the exposure recommended by the light meter in your manual camera. Bracketing is essential when clicking a white animal or a very dark one.

When we spoke of the importance of pre focusing the lens, we did not mention the item to focus on, the answer is simple. If the pet's eye is in focus, the rest of the pet can be out of focus and no one would notice. The appeal of the picture would be lost if the eye isn't in focus.

A highlight on the eye must be captured if the pet has a dark eye with feathers or fur. This is possible by either turning on a light in the room or turning the pet's face to the sun. The background can decide how perfect your pet's photo comes out. Use a plain background when you position your pet. For a clear picture of your pet, use a less cluttered background.

It is wise to have a friend around when you shoot the pet. Using your friend as a distraction you can get good pictures of your pet.
