Where to start then?
How does it start? It starts with a mosquito - the only known about vector of this disease. Say there's a heartworm infected pet and a mosquito bites into it. Microfilariae pass into the mosquito that way, through the bite. In about ten to twenty eight days the "passenger" matures into larvae which enters a new pet's body through the vector's bite. The bite is the cue - the new host then receives matured larvae and stay there.
Microfilariae are then produced by worms in the pet host's heart.
The time table is not the same, it can range from six to seven months after infection in dogs, and some eight months in cats post-infection.
