Dog Door - Size Guide, Locking Settings, and Other Tips

You need to pick the right size and locking features, at the very least, when planning to install a dog door in your home.

Size and size-cut matters - measure your dog for a comfortable "fit"

Dog doors are available in various sizes, some can accommodate large dogs, some perfect for small dogs - that's a large spectrum or varying heights and shoulder widths to choose from. But if you dog is a large as pony, you should get the extra large doors. Better yet, consider a custom-made door. Large and very large dog doors often come in a size of their own, so there's often no problem with shoulder width right there.

But if you got the most common one-size-range-fits-most dog door, you need to choose the size cut precisely. So you have to measure your dog's dimensions - height, weight, and the width of its shoulders. Don't guess, go ahead and measure and check where that measurement falls under in the size cut guide. After you measure your dog's relevant dimensions, follow the guide.

There's probably no one who knows your pet better than you do, but just to be on the safe size, if you make a mistake and choose a smaller cut size of the dog door for your pet, you could end up inconveniencing your dog. Your pet might need to kneel a bit lower and crawl just to get in.

You may already know this, but some pets tend to muscle their way through pet doors. This happens often especially when at play. Now, back to that badly sized dog door - your pet could get injured when it tries to run and slam into the door, thinking it would fit. If it's running away from an intruder or another dog, that ill-sized dog door can be a hassle.

Soft or hard flaps - your choice

With many dogs and a large place, you may have dogs that view your home as one big large playground. You'll need a dog door with a soft flap for that, so your dogs can enjoy the run and the exercise, which is good for them. If you have a small house and a rowdy dog that might abuse a soft flap, a hard flap is suited for him.

Security concerns - why lock settings are vital for dog doors

Flaps swing both ways, but dog doors with added lock setting can be configured. You could, for instance, set up the lock so that when your dog returns at night your pet will be locked inside the house. You can do the reverse so that flap would lock when the dog leaves, allowing you to clean the house without interruptions. If you worry other animals may use the dog door to gain entry to your home, by all means think about getting an automatic dog door. This type of door can be set to unlock and let your pet in or out.
