A pet containment system simply intends to keep your pet "jailed" at home, where it can be safe from outside elements. Pet containment systems - the usual types

The most popular are in-ground units. These are composed of wires that will be buried underground following a marked perimeter. So you can bury it around your yard or your entire house if needed, as long as the wires are long enough. A small device is installed inside your house, plugged directly or powered by batteries. This unit broadcasts radio signals through those buried wires. The wires don't need much depth, just a few inches deep. In-ground units come with a special collar your dog is to wear.

When your dog comes near the boundary wires, the collar senses the radio signals and lets out a warning tone. Suppose your dog stays there, or walks past the wires - the collar lets out a static shock, a buzz. Don't worry about the electric buzz - it's harmless, but it is enough to get your dog's attention, which is important.

Give some time, and with adequate training from the pet owner, the dog will link the tone as something that warns of a buzz, and will not want to go further the marked boundaries. In this manner, your dog will remain inside the marked perimeter. This type of pet containment system is known as an invisible pet fence.

Of course, there are other pet fencing types that make use of no wires. One such variant makes use other ways to "mark" a perimeter's boundaries and tracks your pet's position differently. One type uses a device that sends out radio signals in all directions up to a certain range - that range is the limit of the perimeter. Just as the in-ground type, this kind also relies on a collar to deliver the warning beep and buzz.
