Dog Door - Concise Guide for Pet Owners

If want to install a dog door inside your home, you need to choose the appropriate size, locking settings, material, and color that suits your home.

The door Size and size-cut aspects - you should measure your dog's height, weight, and shoulder fit

Dog doors are available in various sizes, some can accommodate large dogs, some perfect for small dogs - that's a large spectrum or varying heights and shoulder widths to choose from. Do you have a dog one could mistake for a pony? You should consider getting the extra large doors then. You may want to think about a custom-order dog, especially if yours is really a big dog, with a capital B. Large and very large dog doors often come in a size of their own, so there's often no problem with shoulder width right there.

If you don't have a big, big dog then you'll be looking at the common size range of dog doors, one that offers at least three size categories in the size cut guide - small, medium, and large. So you get a good fit for your dog, you need to measure the height and shoulder width of your pet. Most dog doors come with size cut guides indicating weight range, height, and shoulder width. After you measure your dog's relevant dimensions, follow the guide.

Only you, the pet owner, would be in a position to know just about everything about your dog - but if you make a mistake and get a smaller sized dog door measurement, you may inconvenience your pet. You don't want your pet to kneel and crawl like a thief sneaking into a hole that's too tight.

It's not rare for pets to barge through an opening when they think they can fit right through. That happens when they're playing. Now, back to that badly sized dog door - your pet could get injured when it tries to run and slam into the door, thinking it would fit. What if your dog was being chased by an enemy dog, or is running scared of an intruder? Kneeling to get through that door is a hassle.

Hard or soft flaps - not too many options there

With many dogs and a large place, you may have dogs that view your home as one big large playground. It's recommended that a soft flap be used, so that the dogs in play can ram themselves through the soft flap if needed. When yours is a small house with an overeager dog that could abuse that soft flap, then a hard flap is recommended.

Lock settings on dog doors and why they matter

Flaps swing both ways, but dog doors with added lock setting can be configured. For example, you can set it to lock once your pets come back indoors after evening play. If you want to vacuum the house, for example, you can do the reverse - so your dog will be locked out when it leaves through dog door. If you worry other animals may use the dog door to gain entry to your home, by all means think about getting an automatic dog door. Your pet will be allowed to pass through the door since it unlocks in response only to your pet.
