No Bark Collar - Looking for an Alternative to Shock Collars?

Dogs with barking problems have a clear and effective solution these days. The device is called a no bark dog collar and when you purchase one and use it on your dog, the idea is the collar will prevent your dog from barking. The collar sends out annoying stimulations whenever your dog barks - in time the annoyance will not be something the dog looks forward to. As effective static collars can be, some dog owners express concern on whether these collars harm your dog in the process.

How electric shocks affect a dog

A bark collar releases one of three stimuli, depending on the type - a harmless spray, a low volt shock, an ultrasonic sound; the static collar is one of these. Sound uses ultrasonic sound only dogs can hear. In some studies, the effectiveness of all three types have been compared; the result is that the sound type seem to lag behind the static and spray type, which are tied for effectiveness.

There are various videos only showing people allowing themselves to get shocked by collars, to supposedly demonstrate the pain. These are often casually filmed and usually features some family members holding on to a shock collar that's part of an invisible fence. The moment they walk outside the perimeter, the collar goes off, shocking them. They yell is shock, but human reaction could be exaggerated.

The level of voltage a static collar actually releases, and this info is hard for some pet owners to believe, is no more shocking that the static one feels after touching the side of a refrigerator and getting a buzz.

The stimulation level can be adjusted in all collars

The setting the static collar comes with is just a default setting - usually set on the lowest - but it can be adjusted; increased or decreased as you see fit. Usually this starts with the lowest level. Upon the dog owner's observation, if the dog has gotten used to and is barking despite the level of shock, the stimulation level is to be increased. You have to observe well at which settings the dog ceases to bark, and keep there for some time. The shocks stop being emitted as soon as the dog stops barking, so this is not torture, just inconvenience on the dog's part.

One good alternative to shock collars - Citronella spray collars

The worry behind electrocuting your pet is valid - no one wants to do that - but the level of current used by static collar is negligible, actually. If you find the foregoing still unconvincing, there's nothing wrong with that. There are other types of no bark collars out there, ones that do no use a shock as stimulus. Product choice means competition and that's good. The spray or Citronella type, by the way, is just as good as the static type.
