Atlantis Astronauts Are Testing A New Urine Filtration Device

It seems like scientists are thinking of everything. Smart phones, computers, and televisions and all the other devices we use on a daily basis are constantly being upgraded. For whatever reason, people nowadays seem to think that they need to keep up with all of the latest gizmos that appear. Consumers likely won't pay much attention to one of the newest inventions which is currently being tested by space shuttle astronauts. It's a device that filters urine and turns it into a sports drink.

You're probably thinking that there's no way you'd drink urine that's been filtered You've probably heard or read stories of unfortunate individuals who have been trapped without water and forced to drink their own urine, but it's not an option most of us like to think about. Filtered urine is a big step into the future though. Human wastes produced in space are either released into the atmosphere or sent back to Earth to be disposed of. One potential benefit of urine filtration is that it can eliminate problems with water scarcity in the future.

Urine isn't actually being used currently though. Dirty water is being used instead. The device may be affected thanks to the zero-gravity conditions in space, and it's vital that they test it and find out. The astronauts won't be consuming the test results though. They probably will in the future though, just not yet. Spacecraft and the International space station are fitted with water filtration systems that require the use of electricity. However, electricity is certainly a scarce resource in space. The devices use forward osmosis instead of electricity, and they need to determine if the process still works in space. More testing will need to be done to determine if the resulting water is safe to drink and if the liquid produced will be palatable.

The people on Earth certainly wouldn't appreciate having to drink recycled urine. Fortunately for us, our reliance on this technology seems to be very, very far off into the future. The survival of our species may end up depending on this technology.Doc No.sdlkh-sdAE
